Herb Weiss has enjoyed a distinguished 40-year career in journalism, earning a national reputation as an expert on aging, health care and medical issues. Over 795 articles that he has authored or co-authored have appeared in national trade publications, and Rhode Island daily, weekly and monthly newspapers.
The Pawtucket resident writes a weekly senior’s commentary covering issues that impact older Rhode Islanders, which is published in the Pawtucket Times, Woonsocket Call and for Senior Digest, a monthly publication for seniors. His articles also appear in RINewsToday.com, a state-wide news blog.
Herb is a recipient of the 2003 AARP Rhode Island’s Vision Award for his weekly newspaper columns. He is a two-time recipient (1994 and 1999) of the American College of Health Care Administrator’s National Award for his coverage of long-term care issues. He was also awarded the Distinguished Alumni’s Award by the Department of Applied Gerontology at the University of North Texas in 1998, for writings covering senior issues. In 1997, he was selected by the prestigious McKnight’s LTC News to be one of its “100 Most Influential People” in Long-Term Care. In 2016, Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo appointed him to serve on the Rhode Island Advisory Commission on Aging and he still sits on this group.
Herb is a 2012 graduate of the Theta II Class of Leadership Rhode Island, Providence, Rhode Island.
In 2014, Weiss co-edited an e-book with Dr. Nancy Carriuolo, then president of Rhode Island College, detailing the emails of Richard Walton, a well-known Rhode Island social activist.
In 2016, Weiss also published a collection of his articles on aging issues, called Taking Charge: Collected Stories on Aging Boldly.
Herb and his wife, Patty Zacks, and his chocolate lab, Molly, reside in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
