As a child, I pulled John Cady's Civic and Architectural Development of Providence off my father's library shelf. I have been fascinated by the subject ever since. Having read the Hardscrabble Calendar many years ago, I thought it might be interesting someday, to investigate Stamper's Bottom to see what Hardscrabble was really like. During unrelated research I came across the notice for the Probate Sale of Benjamin Addison's property in Hardscrabble, connecting the Addison's Hollow with a name. Again, while doing other research I noted residents listed in the 1836 Providence Directory as residing in Hardscrabble, a neighborhood I had thought destroyed in 1824. That distraction redirected my efforts to the above result.
