About Timothy M. Phelps

Timothy M. Phelps has been researching Newport slave traders for the past seven years for his forthcoming book about his own family's involvement in the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The tentative title for the book is The Wickedest of All. A Wanton descendant, Phelps is a retired reporter who worked in Washington, New York and the Middle East for the Los Angeles Times, Newsday and The New York Times. He is co-author of the best-seller Capitol Games: Clarence Thomas, Anita Hill, and the Story of a Supreme Court Nomination, published by Hyperion in 1992. He currently lives on the farm he grew up on in Portsmouth, R.I.
